ACTIVITY PLANNED – JULY TO SEPTEMBER 2003

During the period under review ARUP Islamabad participated in the following activities:
. Promoting Traffic Education through Sports Field.
Series of sports activities will be undertaken for promoting love for traffic signs amongst the youth. First event of the series “A FOOTBALL Tournament” has been organized through “Ever Green Football Academy” of G – 10/3.
. Traffic Warden System.
Under this system selected volunteers representing various walks of life and road sector NGOS, after a short orientation course, will be diploid in various parts of the city to report traffic violations ,traffic signals state and on performance of traffic police staff
.Traffic Committee.
Based on the experiences of RESCUE 15 management committee for looking after day to day traffic related activities is under consideration. This committee will comprise of reps of various government departments and road users.
. School Lecture Series.
Organized series of lectures at various schools & institutes are planned for this period.
.Safety Driving Courses for various organizations.
Proper courses with the help of experts of this field are now being organized to promote safety amongst drivers.
. Steps to Improve Safety of vulnerable group (pedestrians & 2 wheeler occupants).
Series of steps are now being proposed in the city management and traffic police for improving visibility and safety of this group.
. Membership Drive – ARUP.
Efforts are in hand to invite caring organizations and individuals to join ARUP.
. Computerization of Data for Vehicles Operating in Islamabad.
Based on difficulties experienced of reaching to the right owner of any vehicle during emergency (or after an accident) the computerization of data is under consideration. This information will be available to RESCUE 15 and Traffic Police staff only.
. TV Programme series on Road Safety Issues. Preparation of series of programs on traffic related subjects is under active consideration. Two programs of twenty minutes each will be televised on different TV channels to promote rules awareness and traffic safety.
. Electronic sensors and cameras for better traffic control. Modern state of the art electronic equipment for traffic control is being proposed for Federal Capital Traffic police.

ACTIVITY REPORT – April to June 2003
During the period under review ARUP Islamabad participated in the following activities:

APRIL
. Introduction meeting with organisers of “ www.apnaislamabad.com was held on 01 Apr to discuss mutual promoting of one anothers work and placing publicity banners on both web sites (ARUP & Apnaislamabad).
. Seminar on “Traffic Safety” held at Faisalabad was attended by around 200 road users representing various walk of life & gender. Proviincial Minister and district Nazim also addressed the audience.
. Executive Board meeting of ARUP was held in the conference room of SSP Faisalabad.
· Members of the executive board of ARUP had an informal meeting with the SSP Faisalabad.
. Farewell dinner was hosted by Islamabad Police for outgoing SSP Mr. Kalim Imam at the Rescue 15 Complex.
. Breakfast meeting was held with the visiting rep of MMM from Karachi. Various works of ARUP were discussed and he agreed to our proposal of joining ARUP as a corporate member.

MAY
. Meeting was organised for visiting ADB Consultant on “Afghan Trade & Cross Border Problems” at Hotel rising Sun in G – 10/4. The same was attended by road users representing various walks of life especially members of business community participating in trade with Afghanistan.
. During a meeting with Commandant F I A Training Academy, his propsal for conducting a refresher cource for their drivers was discussed and agreed.
. Formal presentation for subjects and conduct of 2 days training for FIA Drivers was given on 12 May at the academy.
. First training for 20 drivers was organised on 26 & 27 May at the lecture hall of FIA training Academy. This course was comprised of following subjects:
o The Vehicle
o Engine
o Road Sense & Rules
o Driving in general
o Safety during driving
o Emergencies – vehicle, engine and driving
This course was conducted with the help & assistance of a retired police inspector and two members of ARUP (Engr. Imran Mahmood and Captain Hasan Awan of Honda workshop at Rawalpindi.

JUNE
. Road Safety Day Workshop by NH&MP and Daily Express was held at Islamabad on 3 June 2003. This was the first such activity by any member of the news media. Display stalls by various organizations and distribution of safety leaflets added color to this activity. Two members of ARUP were in the Seminar Recommendation committee and the activity was covered by both electronic & proint media. Photographs & report of this activity was also published in Shifa News.
. Flower show was organized with Traffic Police at Khiaban Chowk (courtesy Global Design & TNC Enterprises) on 4 Feb 03.
. TRAFFIC MELA at Islamabad was organized by “Institute of Road Safety & Traffic Environment” from 16 to 20 June 2003. Sponsored banners with traffic signs were placed on all major roads of the twin cities and with light poles of selected roads. Exhibition of road related equipment continued through out these days. Most of all the leaflets and stickers of HONDA were appreciatedl. Delivery vehicles of “TAPAL TEA” decorated with traffic signs were paraded during this mela. Road shows were conducted through these vehicles and during these shows the road users were asked simple road safety questions and winners were awarded gifts.
. Closing event of Traffic Mela was held on 23 June at Hotel Holiday Inn. The days programme included live coverage by Roshan Pakistan, closing ceremony, award of gifts and souvenirs and a musical evening.

. Met Secy of PPEPCA at his office on 27 June and discussed possibilities of joining hands with their members for promoting road safety and road users rules awareness.
. Luncheon meeting with the team of Media Vision and SPTV was held on 30 June to discuss possibility of a series of TV programmes on road matters.

MONTHLY ACTIVITY REPORT – MARCH 2003

. A sharing office in the traffic police complex at F - 8 for new computerisation project was handedover to ARUP Islamabad for renevation.
. Two members of traffic police and one volunteer of ARUP participated in a one week training on software from 4 March 2003 at the premises of M/s WINSOFT at Rawalpindi
. Computer with upgraded software was shifted for data entry to new office in traffic police complex on 12 March 2003. Since then the work on adding data on the same is progressing fast though police operator and ARUP Volunteers.
. Had a short meeting with Secy General ARUP at Islamabad airport on 17 March. ARUP Islamabad accounts for the period 01 July 2001 to 30 June 2002 were handed over.
. Meeting at Traffic Office at F 8 with the transporters was held to discuss routine complaints received from general public.
. Only one Flower Show was organised during the month al Kulsoom Plaza Chowk and leaflet on “Arrangements for 23 March Prade” (sponsored by ARUP & Khawaja Money Changer) was presented by police officers to road users. Area was decorated with banners carrying safety messages and logos of Traffic Police & ARUP.
. New leaflet for “Proper Number Plates” was printed by ARUP and presented to ASP Traffic for distribution amongst duty officers.
. Participated in workshop organised by Project FERTS of ENERCON at Best Westren Hotel Islamabad.
. Gave a formal presentation to G M Admin of OGDC for conducting six courses of two weeks each for their drivers. The proposal was prepared in consultation with Engr Tariq Abdul Raheem (ARUP Member ) of The House of Quality.
. Proposal for computerisation of registration books and transfer of data to the magnetic tape of new driving licences is under preparation.
. On 24 March met SP Mahmood Masood of NH&MP to discuss progress of computerisation of their accident reports data.
. Met the CEO of NTRC on 24 March and discussed possibilities of sustainable special students and ladies public service transport routes.
. Ten Urdu and two English copies of ARSB were sold to GTDI at Islamabad.
. One neon sign from old office at F – 10 has been redone and shifted to new office in traffic complex at F – 9.
. Undersigned and one new member ( Engr Imran Mehmood) participated in the Peers Meeting of one of the nineteen studies of project FERTS at Enercon on 31 March 2003.
. Three ARUP Islamabad members have provided their banners for the workshop planned at Faisalabad on 31 March. Courtesy one life member, SHEFANG Restaurent of Murree has offerred discount to all participants of this workshop.

MONTHLY ACTIVITY REPORT – JANUARY / FEBURARY 2003
During the month under review ARUP Islamabad participated in the following activities:

. Meeting was held in the ASP Office at traffic complex to discuss traffic and safety problems in the capital. The same was attended by JS Islamabad, undersigned , reps of CDA, Reps of other traffic related NGOs, Hamdard Univercity and officers of Traffic Police.
. Meeting at Traffic Office at F 8 with the transporters of Islamabad and local team of CTREK to discuss various route and vehicle related problems. The same was chaired by ASP Traffic and attended by about 20 transporters and four members of ARUP.
. Later an informal meeting of ARUP Members was held with ASP Traffic during which the ASPs propsal of regularly conducting flower distribution show was agreed and ARUP Islamabad offered its services in organising the same.
. Few days later another meeting was held at traffic office with the transporters and chaired by S S P Islamabad. SP & ASP also attended the same. Transporters agreed to the SSP's proposal of introducing uniform for drivers and conductors of public transport operating in Islamabad. Glimpses of meeting were shown in the news bulletin of PTV & PTV World.
. ARUP Islamabad earlier proposal of computerising the ticketing data has been accepted by Traffic Police Authorities. Procedural details are contained in their letter issued to ARUP Islamabad. ARUP Islamabad is now setting up a dedicated office at F8 traffic police complex and intends starting the computerisation work soon after Eid holidays. Software is currently under check by the M/S WINSOFT of Rawalpindi.
. Three Flower Shows were organised during the month. Two at zero point and one at Aabpara Chowk. The areas were decorated with banners carrying safety messages and logos of Traffic Police & ARUP. Flower with safety leaflets were distributed to all commuters by officers of traffic police. SSP also participated in the third show and thanked the organisers and sponsors. Banners, leaflets and flowers were sponsored by Curtain Muesum, Saeed Sweets and AlAsif Hardware (all of F10 Markaz and members of ARUP). Last show with interviews of many participants was telecast by “City Channel of SPTV”.
