This is First of regular newsletters planned for issue during 3rd week of every 2nd month. From next issue it well is a bilingual newsletter.
This newsletter is covering period from 01 Jan 99 to 30 April 99.

Activities

Executive Board Meeting was held at Lahore on 6 March. Next meeting is being planned for end Mayor early June depending upon return of President Engr. Fawad ul Haque from abroad.

WORKSHOPS-ARUP

First workshop at Lahore was held at Hotel Ambassador on 6 March under arrangements of Sardar Humayun Khan. This was attended by all stake holders of road users. Traffic Police officers and officials participated in large number.
Second workshop was held at KPT auditorium by Sindh Region under arrangements of
Kh Raffat Zaheer on 17 March. All stake holders particularly students, intelligenceia, transporters, Traffic Police and Govt officials were amongst the participants.

Both the conferences got good coverage and reporting in the following day English, Urdu national and regional newspapers.

Workshops by Balochistan & NWFP region are anxiously awaited. These may be planned for Mayor June after consultation with country office.

ARUP participated in:

  • Workshop organized by "SHEHRSAZ" I at Lahore on Urban Transport planning & Management on 14 & 15 April.
  • Workshop held at Lahore on 17 April for Dutch SWOV & WB project for Lahore Urban Transport Program.
  • Finnroad workshop at Quetta on 19 & 20 April for "Traffic Safety Education &
    information
  • Planning sessions for Finnroad workshops & seminars scheduled at Karachi on 29 April and in Lahore & Islamabad during May. ARUP is now a co-host for this series of activities.
  • Meeting at ARUP Office and Workshop at PIA training Centre held in Karachi on 29 April for Finnroad project. ,
  • First International Conference on "Novice Driver Issues" held through internet & email during April (web address http://drivers.com).

CONSTITUTION

After number of meetings and consulting all valuable comments received from various members, finalization of constitution has been completed. A copy of the "FINAL CONSTITUTION" has been sent to all members of the Executive Board.

GENERAL

  • ARUP Stamps for regional offices (two each) have been mailed to all regional offices.
  • Country Office Account Number with Bank of Punjab F -10 Branch Islamabad is 228.
  • Registration process for ARUP is now being activated at Islamabad.

INFORMATION FROM REGIONAL OFFICES

Following please be provided as soon as possible:

  • Membership state and targets for next 3 months.
  • Allocation of membership numbers to each district of the region.
  • Targets achieved and works planned for the next fiscal year (July 99 to June 2000). .Any other information for inclusion in next newsletter.
  • Address details of persons and organizations whom a copy of this and similar mail from country office is to be sent.

WORKS IN HAND

Preparation of new leaflet, web site, email account, new video and setting up of country office is awaiting availability of funds.
Press briefing is being planned with next Executive Board Meeting.

Friendly Reminder

Many of the "Executive Board" members have not sent their completed application form and contribution to country office -Please expedite.

EXTRACTS From our Information Leaflet
National Road Users workshop held at Islamabad on Oct. 20. 1998.
Purpose
The purpose of this workshop was to establish whether there is a need for the enthusiasm and sufficient well-motivated volunteer resources to establish a self- funding road users association in Pakistan.

Ad-hoc Road Users Committee
A 16 member Ad-hoc committee was formally announced at the end of the workshop. The committee shall try to peruse the implementation of priorities and tasks that the groups defined for the Association during one year.

First of the Major Recommendations

The Ad-hoc Committee of the Road Users Association should facilitate formation of similar groups allover the country i.e., at provincial, district and tehsil levels through organizing similar workshops with representatives of major road user groups.

ARUP's First Aim & Objective

To create awareness amongst all stakeholders about their responsibility towards road fund and their safety and culture of good citizenship.
