| Association of Road Users
of Pakistan (ARUP) came into inception in act.
98. with the dedicated and devoted efforts of
its 18 member Executive Board.
The Association in just 16 months has:
- Established offices in Karachi, Multan,
Faisalabad, Lahore and Islamabad.
- Conducted seven seminars and workshops
in Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Faisalabad
and Multan in which recommendations were
made for:
- Implementing the Road Safety Measures.
(Including compulsory use of seat belts).
- Minimizing vehicle emission.
- ARUP recommendations on Road Safety have
been well received by the M/O Communications.
- Enacting the Road Safety Ordinance.
- Implementing a better standard of road
maintenance.
- Enlisted a workforce of over 500 members
and 200 volunteers in all parts of Pakistan.
CURRENT PROJECTS OF ARUP INCLUDE
- Workshop in Karachi on 01 March, 2000
for setting up a Model Professional Commercial
Drivers Training Institute.
- "Road Safety on Motorways &
National Highways" a seminar for Pakistan
Motorway Police in first week of April,
2000 in Islamabad.
- A series of workshops at all provincial
capitals for increasing awareness on all
road matters is being considered.
- Discussions are in progress to establish
a model "Accident Victim Tracking and
Treatment Network" at MIHS -Islamabad.
This will later be enchanced to a country-wide
network with setting up of proper "Trauma
Centers".
VISION STATEMENT OF THE ASSOCIATION IS
"To be recognized as a Dynamic Organization
striving for excellence in achieving highest
standards of Road Users Safety, construction
and cost effective maintenance. Providing
services to the community by maintaining comprehensive
data on Road Network. Creating awareness and
commitment amongst all stakeholders in respect
of proper usage of roads and minimizing emission
pollution".
ARUP HAS SUCCESSFULLY ACCOMPLISHED THE
FOLLOWING
- Consulted with all Stakeholders on preparing
a new Road Safety Ordinance.
- Together with Islamabad City Administration,
Police, EPA, EERCON, Boy Scouts of eight
Schools organized camps for:
- Implementing traffic rules on major roads
and crossings.
- Implementing action against "pressure
horns and smoke emitting vehicles"
in Islamabad.
ARUP was invited by Jaffar Public School,
Karachi to participate in their "Safety
Week" by giving a talk to the "0"
Level students (age 12-16) about the essential
elements of "Road Safety". A brief
introduction of ARUP and its activities was
given. Mr. K. Raffat Zaheer stressed upon
the proper adherence to traffic rules, use
of seat belts and proper maintenance of vehicles
for ensuring that accidents can be minimized.
He emphasized the active part students can
play towards achieving these goals. Youngsters
being the future generation of Leaders/Managers
can contribute in helping build a better and
safer Pakistan.
