-
Things do not happen suddenly
to good drivers because they expect the unexpected. It is your
job as a driver to expect other road users to get in your way
and ensure you can stop in time when they do. The consequences
of not doing this are fatal.
-
Drive at a speed and at a distance to other vehicles
and pedestrians, which enables you to fully concentrate and
spot all dangers in time to avoid a crash. If you hit a pedestrian
you stand a 90% chance of killing him or her at 40mph, but a
10% chance at 20mph. A safe speed may be well below the limit
on urban and rural roads.
-
Never overtake or pull out if there is even the slightest
chance of your colliding with something. Take the time to check
twice and be sure that what you are about to do is absolutely
100% safe.
-
Check mirrors regularly.
-
Stop well behind vehicles in front.
-
Always apply brakes early and smoothly.
- Use horn only when appropriate.
- Be patient during delays.
- Be extra careful on blind spot.
-
Give appropriate signals well in advance
-
Always make allowances for:
- Unpredictable behaviour of animals
- Lack of skill and knowledge of other drivers
- Unpredictable actions on the part of other drivers
- Hazardous climatic conditions e.g. fog, rain, snow, ice etc.
-
Hazardous road features e.g. curves, hills, narrow roads,
bridges, absence of road signs, poor visibility.
-
Avoid excessive meals when driving because heavy meals
will cause sleepiness
-
If FOG is present.
-
Slow down speed and turn on low light
- Don’t overtake and don’t drive too close to the vehicle
ahead
- If the fog gets strong stop and wait in a safe place.
- Always remember in situations with poor visibility, it is
important to be able
to see others and to be seen.
- Stick to the speed limit at all times.
- Always obey road traffic signals.
- Always obey traffic lights, do not “Jump” lights when
amber.
- Be prepared to stop even if the light is green in case someone
makes a mistake.
- Keep a safer following
distance from the vehicle in front of you.
- On long trips, take breaks
frequently.
- Use your mirrors frequently
to be aware of what’s going on around you.
- Do not cut back line
too soon.
- Use indicators when
changing lanes.
- Be alert for pedestrians
(especially children) and animals.
- Turn slowly to negotiate
bends in a safer manner and avoid skidding.
- Be tolerant of poor
driving of others.
- Always use seat
belts.
- Always maintain
safe speed.
- Drive carefully
in poor visibility
(Light).
- Avoid looking directly
into headlights.
- Check
your headlights are aligned properly.
